As each year rolls around here at Derbyshire, there are certain things that we are sure not to miss. They are the things that we look forward to, tell our new residents about, and mark on the calendar in January.

If you are considering moving to the area or just looking for a good excuse to visit, check out our list below for the best events in Western North Carolina.

Winterfest Polar Plunge – Blowing Rock, NC

Typically everyone schedules are pretty empty early in the year due to the time it takes to recover from the craziness of the holidays, but someone in Blowing Rock decided that. Each year in January, they celebrate with everything from a chili cook-off to ice carving demos to the crowd favorite, the Polar Plunge into Chetola Lake (complete with judges and awards).

Biltmore Estate – Festival of Flowers – Asheville, NC

Guaranteed to be one of the most beautiful outdoor festivals, the Biltmore Estate hosts their annual Festival of Flowers each year from April to May. The gardens at the Biltmore are always top-notch, but the festival takes everything a step further and showcases the work of the expert gardeners just as everything is beginning to bloom, including 100,000 tulips (and that’s just in the entrance garden).

Tryon April Fool’s Festival – Tryon, NC
